One of my last purchases before my 2024 fashion No Buy, was a longer, light beige (irl it reads more like cream) single breasted coat, second hand and NWT, from COS:
Crafted from cotton in a light beige hue, this midi-length, classic car coat is cut for an oversized fit and elevated with a removable quilted liner for versatility. The raglan sleeves and exaggerated collar create a modern finish.
The purchase was directly inspired by this post, by , about the chic woman, who is also pictured wearing a cream coat:
So, I am not that chic, as the cream-clad design historian she writes about meeting, and who is quoted saying:
I love this, even though I can not relate to wanting to live in an all-cream apartment.
But as I read it, it resonated with a craving for more lightness, in regards to color, in my wardrobe, and with my outerwear in particular.
So now, I have a cream car coat. I even have a car (which I must take for a wash soon, it´s gross).
And I am happy to say I love the coat, but, I have not yet actually worn it!
Mostly because it´s winter here, and still puffy parka-weather. But as spring is lurking closer, I´m looking forward to making use of it.
It´s just that…I´m kind of nervous about it?
Will a cream coat work for me, with my life, and to be honest: My tendencies to spill stuff?
Yes, I´m an adult, and I´m a careful person in general, but I´m also somewhat clumsy, always have been.
My life is a daily struggle with not tripping, dropping, spilling. I need and make plenty of use for at least one napkin for every meal, and I am lucky if a manage to not smudge my mascara upon application. Not chic.
Something like a black coat would make sense for me (I have one already). Even a beige or grey coat (I have both) lets you get away with commuting on a packed bus, throwing your coat over your chair while sitting down for a meal, getting in line for a beer at an outside festival.
But a cream coat? Can I make it work? Like these lovely ladies?
I have managed to keep a cream blazer intact for over ten years, but a long coat = more fabric = more risk.
I shall channel the spirit of the chic design historian, in her Armani suit, riding the subway. I feel ready. I will live and love in my new coat, take good care of it, make sure to treat stains, maybe even embrace the stains.
No. Fear.
But as it´s still too cold and too wet for the cream car coat to make it´s actual debut, I enjoy seeking out inspiration from the runway. You know, that almost sterile environment that resembles our real life in almost no way at all.
Either (run)way, here are some images that tickles my fancy:
How to wear my new coat:
Adding the coat to a black outfit makes the outfit seem less risky in regards to spillage:
Adding even less black breaks up the outfit in a nice way:
Even if it´s just the shoes:
Speaking of shoes: I will definitely pair it with some gold ones:
And play around with the shape by adding a belt, perhaps:
And of course: Pair it with a short skirt, because:
